Rabbit-Proof Fence is a 2002 Australian drama film based on the book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington Garimara. It is a true story concerning the author's mother, as well as two other young mixed-race Aboriginal girls, who ran away from the Moore River Native Settlement, north of Perth, in order to return to their Aboriginal families, after having been placed there in 1931. The film follows the girls as they trek/walk for nine weeks along 1,500 miles (2,400 km) of the Australian rabbit-proof fence to return to their community at Jigalong, while being tracked by a white authority figure and an Aboriginal tracker.[1]



The soundtrack to the film, called Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit-Proof Fence, is by Peter Gabriel.

Phillip Noyce's search for the Aboriginal actresses who star in the film is described in detail in the "Making Of" on the DVD.

British producer Jeremy Thomas, who has a long connection with Australia, executive-produced the film, selling it internationally through his sales arm Hanway Films.

Whale Rider is a 2002 drama film directed by Niki Caro, based on the novel of the same name by Witi Ihimaera. The world première was on September 9, 2002, at the Toronto International Film Festival.



Plot
The movie's plot follows the story of Paikea Apirana ("Pai") at the age of 12 who is the only living child in the line of the tribe's chiefly succession because of the death of her twin brother and mother during childbirth. By tradition, the leader should be the first-born son — a direct patrilineal descendant of Paikea, the Whale Rider — he who rode atop a whale from Hawaiki. However, Pai is female and technically cannot inherit the leadership.

Ae Fond Kiss... (also known as Just a Kiss) is a 2004 romantic drama film directed by Ken Loach, and starring Atta Yaqub and Eva Birthistle. The title is taken from a Scottish poem by Robert Burns, the complete line being "Ae fond kiss, and then we'll sever..."



Plot
Casim Khan (Yaqub) is a Glaswegian DJ of Pakistani origin. His devout Muslim parents, Tariq and Sadia, have arranged for him to marry his first cousin, Jasmine, and Casim is more or less happy with the arrangement. Casim then meets and falls in love with Roisin (Birthistle), an Irish teacher working in his sister's Catholic school. They then have to decide whether their love is strong enough to endure the repercussions of their actions and without the support of their respective communities.

At the same time, Casim's younger sister, Tahara, struggles to find herself when she cannot gain the respect of either her Scottish schoolmates or her Pakistani relatives. Rukhsana, Casim's older sister, loses her fiancé because Casim's new relationship brings dishonour to the family. Roisin loses her job because the Catholic school's direction does not accept her relation with a Muslim man as a married – though separated – woman because it is considered against the Catholic moral.

The film's central role is the theme of prejudice and cultural clashes, social differences and discrimination.

As with nearly all of Ken Loach's work, it centres around a society, how it functions and lives up to people, their differences and what they have in common.

Mississippi Masala is a romance comedy-drama film directed by Mira Nair, based upon a screenplay by Sooni Taraporevala, starring Denzel Washington, Sharmila Tagore, and Roshan Seth. The film explores interracial romance between African-Americans and Indian-Americans in the United States, and takes place in Mississippi.

It was released in the U.S. on 5 February 1992, after being released in France on 18 September 1991 and in the United Kingdom on 17 January 1992. The film grossed $85 million at the box office.



Plot

A third-generation Indian-Ugandan family residing in Kampala, is expelled from the country in 1972 by the Idi Amin regime. The father, Jay (Roshan Seth) moves with wife, Kinnu (Sharmila Tagore) and daughter, Mina (Sarita Choudhury) to Greenwood, Mississippi to live with family members who own a chain of motels there.

In 1990, 24-year-old Mina, who cleans at Anil's (Ranjit Chowdhry) family's motel (the Monte Cristo), falls in love with Demetrius (Denzel Washington), a local African American carpet cleaner. The respective families erupt in turmoil after the pair are confronted by members of the Indian family during a weekend of pleasure in Biloxi.

Ultimately, the two families cannot come to terms with the inter-racial pair, who flee together in Demetrius' van. Both families need to move on, both emotionally and physically, in order to grow. Jay also needs to change. After a brief return to Kampala to attend a court proceeding on the disposition of his confiscated Ugandan house, Jay relinquishes his long-nurtured dream of returning to Uganda, the place he considered home.

East Is East is a BAFTA award-winning British comedy-drama film released in 1999.

It is set in a British household of mixed-ethnicity, with a Pakistani father and a English mother in Salford, Manchester, in 1971. George Khan (played by Om Puri), the father, expects his family to follow his strict Pakistani ways but his children who were born and grown up in Britain increasingly see themselves as British and reject their father's rules on dress, food, religion, and living in general.

East Is East is based on the play of the same name by Ayub Khan-Din. It was directed by Damien O'Donnell.




Synopsis
George Khan an Pakistani immigrant who has lived in England since 1937 and has been married to Ella, a British woman with an Irish-Catholic background, for 25 years, and has seven children with her - Nazir, Tariq, Abdul, Maneer, Saleem, Meenah and Sajid. The couple runs a popular chippy. The film starts with an arranged marriage of the eldest son to an intentionally attractive Pakistani girl. The son, Nazir, finds himself unable to go through with the marriage. He runs out at the start of the ceremony in front of all the family and guests much to the chagrin of his father and distress of his mother. The perceived shame that this brings on the family results in George disowning his son, telling people who ask about him that he 'is dead'.

The next crisis to fall on George is the discovery that the youngest son Sajid was accidentally never circumcised as required in Islam. Sajid is promptly brought to hospital to get circumcised. When Ella sees the pain her son has suffered from being circumcised at this age we get the first insight into the conflict between her clear love of her husband and her inability to stand up to him.

Crossing Over is a 2009 American independent drama film about illegal immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film deals with the border, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter terrorism and the clash of cultures. Crossing Over was written and directed by Wayne Kramer, himself an immigrant from South Africa, and is a remake of his 1995 short film of the same name. Kramer produced the film alongside Frank Marshall.

Gran Torino is a 2008 American drama film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, who also stars in the film. The film marks Eastwood's return to a lead acting role after four years, his previous leading role having been in Million Dollar Baby, and Eastwood has stated that this is his final film as an actor. The film features a predominantly Hmong cast, as well as Eastwood's younger son, Scott Eastwood, playing "Trey". Eastwood's oldest son, Kyle Eastwood, provided the score. The film opened to theaters in a limited release in North America on December 12, 2008, and later to a worldwide release on January 9, 2009.[3]

The story follows Walt Kowalski, a recently widowed Korean War veteran who is alienated from his family and angry at the world. Walt's young Hmong neighbor, Thao, tries to steal Walt's prized 1972 Ford Gran Torino on a dare by his cousin for initiation into a gang. Walt develops a relationship with the boy and his family.
